Fedora 1 will not install on USB hard drive
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 7, 2005
New to Linux. Need to install Fedora Core 1 from "Linux for Non-Geeks" on Maxtor 200 gig external USB on Windows XP, trying to create dual-boot.
Maxtor has 4 primary partitions, 3 used for pc data backup (NFTS), 4th is 20 gig fat32 for Fedora install. PC C drive is not partitioned, lacks space for Fedora.
Ran install disk with "noprobe" Off, get message before anaconda executes: "Loading USB Storage Driver".
In anaconda get to disk partition section, manual partition is recommended - but only pc hard drive "C" shows - as "hda" (?) , no "sda" (?) for Maxtor. Can't install on "C", no room.
Help for install notes that the partition must be a Root partition - as :H:/", but all Maxtor partitions are as "K:\" - backslash. Need procedure to make a root partition. Couldn't find this in windows XP help.
Have looked in newbie and Fedora install forums, did not see if an external disk works, and some

Lampserver will not install
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 14, 2013
I am trying to install lamp-server on a ubuntu 13.04 machine but when it should start installing it stops with error:aptitude failed(100).
I've searched on the internet and there were several fixes but none worked.
-sudo apt-get update and then try to install lamp
-using sudo tasksel and then manually select lamp-server from the list
sudo apt-get update --fix-missing and then reinstalling
debconf-apt-progress -- apt-get -q -y install lamp-server
I already have lamp-server installed for a while now on another machine(laptop),but the cooler's ventilator died and until I fix it I need to use lamp on another machine but cannot figure a solution for this.
Draftsight for Ubuntu does not Install.
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 6, 2012
Tried to Run & Install "Draftsight for Ubuntu".
I choose Open with Ubuntu Software Center and it stops trying to install after a few minutes with an error.
Is this the way to go about it?
Can I install it with "Open with Archive manager"?
Totally Confused here. Draftsight is a great clone of AutoCad.
I would really like to get it intalled on Ubuntu as it is installed on my Windows PC and Mac.
Ubuntu Will NOT Establish DHCP w/ Router from the Command Line; nmapplet works fine
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 27, 2010
Im wondering if im missing something. I have nm-applet installed, and it has no issue connecting to an unencrypted home wireless network (named linksys). On my arch box, I connect in the following manner:
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys
sudo dhclient wlan0
and I receive a DHCP bind with the router just fine. On Ubuntu, it just repeats "DHCPDISCOVER" over and over again, never giving me a dhcp release. I can Ctrl+C out of dhclient, and immediately get a DHCP bind no issue with nm-applet.
I can ping the router just fine, but it will not give me DHCP from the command line. Is there a lock file or pid I need to kill in order to do this?
I ask because I have another issue where my screen shuts off if I kill GDM (/etc/init.d/gdm stop); Im trying to connect via the command line so I can ssh into my box while the monitor is off and see if I can restart X. Any help would be appreciated...
8.04 AMD64 DVD will not install get busybox
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 26, 2012
I tried to install 8.04 because of an old package that requires such old distros.
When I try to install, it plops into busybox command prompt. Also if I select
from the ubuntu install menu, that goes to busybox as well.
If I choose text install, it does lurch into install mode, but then blows a gasket
complaining no disk drive found.
I managed to install Ubuntu Studio 8.04.1 on same PC. Which is an AM2+
mainboard using nVidia 750a chipset.
I have also run Oracle 5.7 on same PC, and that is a derivative of RHEL,
which rarely installs on an AMD desktop.
So 8.04 (at least the DVD ISO) is a load of *@#$&
Ubuntu will not boot
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 24, 2011
I tried to install Ubuntu on my laptop. It seemed to work the first couple times. Now it won't work. The error message is below but first I will give more information.
My computer has always been running Windows Vista. I just heard of Ubuntu and it seems very fascinating so I figured I would try it.
First I went to ubuntu.com, clicked the "download ubuntu" link and followed the 4 steps listed on that page. Step 1: I downloaded the 32-bit Ubuntu 10.10 the filename is ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386. I also downloaded wubi for some reason but I don't remember when or why.
Step 2: Since my disc drive is completely broken and non-functional, I created a usb drive to get Ubuntu started. I used the universal usb installer the filename for that program is Universal-USB-Installer-184.108.40.206.
Step 3: I restarted my computer with the usb as the first in the boot order. I chose the first option in that menu which I think just ran Ubuntu from the usb drive. I ran the insta
Ubuntu will not Dual Boot Beside Windows 7error codes
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 3, 2015
I have windows 7 laptop, Dell. I downloaded the newest edition of Ubuntu (Twice)to see if it would install and dual boot beside Windows 7. Unsucessful on several attempts. Once I reboot the computer it will give ma a choice of 7 or Ubuntu. I decide on Ubuntu it starts to boot into Ubuntu than a black screen with all types of Kernel error codes that i'm unfamilur with. one is---(1.292618) kernel panic-not syncing: no working init found.
Try passing init option to Kernel (see Linux Documentation/init.txt for guidance..
I am not sure what all this means any help would be appreactiated...
