Internet Explorer vs. Other Browsers (Internet Standards)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 10, 2004
So here's the scoop.
I am taking a class at good old strayer university and we are having discussion on why companies would choose to follow standards. Our online courses only support Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers, so out of frustration I posted the thought that our online classroom had chosen function over standard. My thought being that if the class does not support Opera, Mozilla, Firefox, and the large list of other main stream browsers that the online classroom is not following web standards. Although I am not an Opera user, I am pretty sure Opera is known for being standard compliant.
One of the students in class pointed out that Mozilla runs the IE executable and therefore my theory was off base. Is this true? I see where mozilla runs an identical API as that of IE, but does that mean that they have the exact same standard support or that they just make calls to the OS in the same way?

Internet explorer on linux or a free virtual machine?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 16, 2006
My online banking works only with Internet Explorer. Is there any way to make IE work on linux? I guess not... So I think the only way to access my online banking from linux is to install a virtual machine and put Windows on it. Do you know any free one? I used only VMWare before and I know there are a lot, but not all of them are reliable. Did you try any virtual machine?

Developing Win32 QT/MySQL Applications with Ubuntu, Wine, and MinGW
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 15, 2009
Hey Obento lovers!
I thought this might be fun for other OSS developers, or for folks who like to play with cross compiling.
I've found a somewhat kinky way of porting my simple QT4/MySQL program to Win32, and I'm sharing my method with you all.
There's quite a lot of work to do in the Terminal. If you aren't familiar with the terminal, you could have some trouble with a few steps. I'd suggest reading a primer on the Linux CLI system, unless you're feeling brave.
Here's what you'll need:
WineUnzip programMinGWMinGW UtilsWindows version of MySQL (with development libraries)Windows version of CMakeWindows source for QT
A quick google should locate these for you, then run the installers using Wine as you would with any windows app.
If you don't need MySQL support in your program(s), just grab the binary version from Trolltech. Keep in mind that it only comes with SQLite by default, though.
Ensure Wine works. The easiest way to do that is to run the program 'regedit'. If i

Ubuntu kills internet connection
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 11, 2005
Whenever I boot up ubuntu 5.04, it kills my internet connection. I have a Netgear 8 port hub, which is connected to my SMC 7004ABR router, which is plugged into my Zoom ADSL modem. One box is Ubuntu 5.04 and the other is XP. Once the Ubuntu box boots up, neither box can access the internet. The only way to get back on is shut all hardware down and restart. Also, my internet connection has slowed from about 1200 kbps to less than 400 kbps. Here is my /var/log/syslog file (followed by output from "ifconfig -a" and "route -n":

How to get Ubuntu/Wine to detect PS3 controller through USB?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 8, 2012
I need some help in order to configure my PS3 controller in Ubuntu 12.04 and use it for playing games I've installed in Wine 1.4.
I don't have bluetooth on my computer so I am trying to get it to work through USB connection only. What I have been doing is the following:
sudo apt-get install libusb-dev libusb-0.1-4
and then downloading, compiling and trying to run sixpair with:
sixpair then complains about missing bluetooth or something similar and then I am stuck. In all of the tutorials I've found they are talking about blutooth pairing which is not what I am trying to do. I believe that sixpair is used for blutooth pairing only but I might be wrong.
I've also stumbled across a tool named QtSixA which I understand is used for pairing of the PS3 and the computer. It detects my PS3 controller and displays it in it's GUI, but I lack knowledge of what to do next.
This is as far as I have come, I would really appreciate any pointers as to what to do next.

I'm glad to see IE getting better. On Windows, it's my browser of choice. I'm no MS fan, and the flaws do mean that one has to be careful. However, after trying all the others, IE is the best "all-around" (features, usability, compatibility, speed). However, on Mac, Safari is way better And of course, if you're on Linux, you should be running Konqueror!!!
Get the best from Evernote on Ubuntu (Wine?)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 7, 2013
Evernote has become an important tool for my work, but i've very limited by the lack of a good Linux client (i'm on 12.04).
I've tried the two availables and them both have major problems: Everpad (https://github.com/nvbn/everpad) is for a very basic user, because tags are managed very poorly, the editor is limited and it slows the launcher down; NixNote (http://nevernote.sourceforge.net/) is better but is still limited and bugged in tag usage, sometimes has weird problems with Evernote formatting and it often crashes or freeze.
The official Evernote web interface is simply too slow and i hate it.
So, i'm stuck with the Windows Evernote Client (188.8.131.5284) under Wine (1.5.5), installed using PlayOnLinux because without it i wasn't able (or Evernote didn't sync).
Anyway, it's far from perfect...
A couple of problems:
- Tray icon disappear and works weird
- Special keys get locked on (for Wine i'm keeping the Alt button pressed but i'm not...)
- Notes scrolling is too fas
HOWTO : Ubuntu + Wine + Garena + WarCraft 3 TFT
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 11, 2011
As a fan of Dota i decided to try to play Dota via Garena under Wine in Ubuntu 10.10
And here Is HOW-TO:
1. You need to have installed Ubuntu or any other Linux distro you use. Also i had installed proprietary driver for my video card for better Video performance.
2. You need to install Wine 1.3.16-18 (with previous versions i didn't tested). Don't install any library's or programs from winetricks, especially any version of IE, cause wine 1.3.16 and higher have it already. Else GUI of Garena will not work normally. AND set it to WinXP mode.
3. Install latest Garena from www.Garena.com
4. Now you need to install Warcraft + TFT or use Warcraft TFT folder (licensed install) already installed under windows and just copy it to Program Files folder in Wine. And download DOTA map to maps/downloads (as in windows).
5. To have normal scrolling of Map in game go to Compiz settings -- >> Cube Rotations -->> Tab Binds -- >> here in Cube Rotation put NONE to rota
