Sony Vaio Ubuntu Install (Black screen fix)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 19, 2010
I had some difficulty installing Ubuntu 10.04 onto a Sony Vaio notebook. The screen would go black while loading. Here is how I fixed the problem.
Sony Vaio S Series. VPCS117GG (PCG-51111W)
(Should also fix problems on similar notebooks with NVIDIA graphics cards)
The basic problem is that the display driver does not recognise the display somehow and it all turns to custard. If you can boot in text modes and run with vesa drivers you can get started, then apply the work around later.
Here's how I did it...
(I dont understand all this, it just happened to work, someone might be able to explain)
1. When the cd loads press F6 to change other options. 'quiet splash' needs to be replaced with 'nomodeset' in the boot options. When it loads install ubuntu as normal. (Try 'single nomodeset i8042.nopnp' if it doesnt work, the aim is to get x started in low res).
2. After installation on first boot change boot options. Try 'single nomodeset i8042.nopnp'. It should boot
Ubuntu Touch Black Screen after Install
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 26, 2015
I want to install Ubuntu Touch on my Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (P5110), and I took the following steps:
1) I rooted the device using this tutorial: http://www.all-things-android.com/co...-mobile-device
It worked perfectly.
2) I installed the ROM app and rebooted into download mod
3) I followed this tutorial to install Ubuntu Touch: http://technoplanners.blogspot.de/20...on-galaxy.html
I took the raring-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip from the above link and the device specific zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...6#post38456296 (the mediafire link).
I installed them both on my tablet, rebooted and.... black screen. It does nothing.
Does anyone have any idea? I can still adb-shell into it, if that helps.
EDIT: I HAVE REDONE THE STEPS, IT WORKS ! Make sure you use this file : https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid...34956548390922 instead of the raring-preinstalled-phablet..
12.10 Ubuntu Install Black Screen problem!
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 23, 2013
I've been trying to install Ubuntu 12.10 on my PC but I've been having issues. I get to the GRUB Screen there 3 options, install ubuntu, try ubuntu without installing and check disc for defects. I've tried all 3 options but each one leads to a black blank screen. This is on a system that came with Windows 8 pre-installed and I want to dual-boot with Ubuntu, so its has UEFI firmware. I changed changed the
but it didn't make a difference. So basically I am stuck on this screen and if I try to continue I get the black blank screen.
Youtube is a black screen (Ubuntu x64 Chromium)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 8, 2011
I installed a minimal Ubuntu build, and on top of that, Chromium and flashplugin-installer. It used to work fine (with minor glitches), but I recently had an issue where Youtube was a black screen, but other flash worked fine. Reinstalling the plugin solved the issue, but I have the problem again, and it's not helping this time, nor is rebooting. Can anybody help?
[SOLVED] Ubuntu 11.10 black screen after boot screen
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 13, 2011
I've been running Ubuntu 11.04, did a clean install 2 months ago. Today I got a update notification to upgrade to 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot and I was a bit hesitant at th beginning but then I said why not and went for it. All went fine at the start.
After it was done with upgrading and cleaning the packages it restarted and I was pretty amazed with the new light dm log in screen. However, I did a restart right away to complete the install. This resulted in a black screen after the boot screen.
I did get a "waiting for network configuration" at the first start up but didn't think any of it at the beginning and everything went fine. But after the second restart, I get the boot screen with the same message and then instead of a log in screen its just black.
I tried restarting form battery source, unplugging all the usb's I had connected but still I get this black screen.
It a bit annoying cause at the moment I can't get past this, therefore I have no access to anything,

[SOLVED] Black screen after booting Ubuntu 11.10 from USB
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 19, 2012
I'm trying to install ubuntu 11.10 x64 onto my laptop and replace windows. I saved the ubuntu 11.10 DVD iso to my fat32 USB stick and ran the Universal USB installer. I resarted my computer and hit esc then F9 to access the boot menu. From there I was able to boot from my USB. Next, a black menu screen with grey font appeared.
It had 5 or 6 different options to select from, including: Run ubuntu from usb; install ubuntu to hard disk; advanced options; and help. The first two options gave me the same issue. Everything appeared to be fine for about 5 seconds but after many strings of code had appeared on the screen, it flashed once and went completely black. However, I was surprised to hear "chimes" or something (seemingly implying some measure of success) only moments after the screen had gone black. Each time I was forced to restart because I had no idea what was going on with the screen black and all.
Here are my specs:

Ubuntu 10.04 black screen on boot
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 2, 2010
I'd like to test Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop Dell Inspiron 510m.
It is currently running Ubuntu 9.10.
The problem is:
- insert CD
- see initial splash screen
- see splash screen with white/red dots
- see blank screen and unable to do anything
I build a bootable USB stick from another Ubuntu 10.04 installation
using unetbootin, and I have the same behaviour on the Dell..
Interesting, same thing happens if I select the option for text boot
from the usbs tick :-(
Ubuntu 8.04 black screen while playing games
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 29, 2008
I have a problem when trying to games on Ubuntu 8.04, the screen goes black in full screen mode with a resolution higher than 800x600.
I searched the forum and noticed that a few other people got the same problem but didn't get help or it didn't fix their problem.
I got no problem with playing games in 800x600 resolution, but the games that starts with a higher resolution is a problem. Because I can't change the resolution down to 800x600.
Any help is appreciated and I will gladly help with output if you give me the code/command to run them.
Thanks in advanced Christor.
