I cannot get either Ubuntu 7.10 or Sabayon 3.4e to install on my HP Pavalion a340n.

The install screen comes up in both cases and after selecting what I think is the proper install the process starts and then hanged up after a short while. The message indicates a drive mount problem. Any suggestions.
My openSUSE honeymoon is over.

Hello! Recently I got the urge to try out some other distros. Having a Debian PPC instance on an old PowerBook already, and being that I recently tried out Fedora and Arch, I decided to look elsewhere for another "top tier" Linux OS to tinker with. openSUSE came on the radar right away. In my reading I learned that they support Gnome and KDE rather equally, even though KDE is the default. I liked this outlook a lot as it made openSUSE come across as rather agnostic about things like this. I also loved how on the larger DVD it asked you which environment you want. I must say, 12.3 as a whole is a very solid openSUSE release. As time progressed I began to run into a few headaches that made me take a step back and ask "...really?" I've highlighted some of them below.
First off, my Nvidia drivers on my desktop just never worked. I would boot up and my system would go into a hard lock. I had no explanation for it and no idea what to do, nor did several openSUSE users

Need Help setting up XBMC + Tvheadend + live tv working with my Hauppauge PVR350
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 8, 2012
I Need Help setting up XBMC + Tvheadend + live tv working with my Hauppauge PVR-350 tv card, which the TV card was working with CSMonkey TV Remote before the installation, so I know the TV Card still works, I dual boot with Win 7 and it works with Media Center as well. My TV died, and want to get XBMC with TVHeadend setup so that I can distribute the TV signal to all my PC's in the house, I just choose this setup with XBMC with Tvheadend after reading
I then ran the commands for "Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.04 & 11.10 - PRE XBMC Eden 11.0 (testing)
1 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexandr-surkov/xbmc-pvr
2 sudo apt-get update
3 sudo apt-get install xbmc tvheadend

Connecting to my unRaid box from Ubuntu
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 26, 2011
Still quite a newbie so be gentle!
I've solved some of the growing pains from making the move across to Ubuntu (getting my Lexmark printer to work was especially pleasing!) but I've ground to a halt on this one.
In windows-speak I want to map a network drive to one of the share areas on my unRaid box. I've set the box to have a fixed IP address, but my Google skills are struggling - I've found a few possible guides on what to do, but I don't understand what's going on well enough.
I think the end result is a mount point for each of the share areas (so one for Movies, one for Documents, etc.). I also think that the following guides are semi-close to what I'm looking for, but I don't know if that's true...and I can't say I totally understand what's going on. Rather than run a series of sudo commands that I barely understand it's better to stop and ask for help.
So any advice, tips, step-

Originally I had my windows 7 install on the 2 WD drives in Raid 0
I've migrated my install over to the new 1TB seagate and windows works fine.
I've changed my BIOS settings to put all of my RAID capable chips into IDE mode.
Windows recognizes both drives as separate and full of RAW data that it cannot interpret (sounds about right to me)
First boot into Kubuntu 12.04 live cd and running the installer:
Shows the 2 hard drives as 1 raid drive. Even though the mobo is in IDE mode.
In windows 7 used disk management to delete the volumes and make both drives unallocated space.
No change in Kubuntu installer
In windows used disk management to format each drive separately (NTFS) and assign a drive letter in wi

Scanner utility in Linux to operate my scanner
location: linux.com - date: March 30, 2010
Oh Master geek, I need your help with this one. I have a all in one printer / fax / scan which i was able to download the supportive drivers from the manufacturers web site for Linux OS. The cups driver is working as I have been printing within the Linux environment for some time now. The problem is I can not get the scanner to function. I downloaded the required drivers for scanner operation and here is the puzzling part, after reading some articles relating to my problem. If I enter this command in my terminal, ' sudo scanimage > filename.pnm it will send a signal to my scanner and it operates. I downloaded the trial version of Vuescan, but it gives me a message that it cannot detect a scanner attached, and in it's read me file, it list my model as a scanner it's program supports. I want to know if I can incorporate the command I listed above into a scan utility program, like " XSane Image scan " or some of the other smaller utilities offered as programs. Vuescan says if
