hello every one,
I am new to linux(ubuntu). I want to install a version control- git on my ubuntu server and allow access to my team mates from both ubuntu and windows.
I have followed the instructions mentioned here.( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Git).
but after I distributed the public key of my local system(using ubuntu). I was able to initialise the gitosis using
sudo -H -u gitosis gitosis-init < initialKeyFileName.
But the next step which I performed on the client failed reporting "git is not installed".
and asking me to install it using "apt-get install git-core"
Is it so that I have to install git on my local system also.
please comply if I am ignorant of any basic information.
I request to please respond.
CVS and Git
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 12, 2013
I`m a student preparing myself for the degree project, Which I plan to do on C using Eclipse CDT Helios on an Ubuntu 12.04 machine.
So what I exactly want to ask is How should I keep track of versions of my code ?
I did a little reading on eclipse`s website and found that eclipse supports CVS by default but I don`t have a CVS server at my university that I can access.
So It means I have to store all my files on the local machine.
I also read about Git, but it seems to be more of distributed system. Is there any system that stores versions of my code on the local machine and can integrate with eclipse ?
Expecting great new ideas

Howto: set up git repository over ssh
- date: May 1, 2012
It is assumed that you have a server and where a user (git_user) has ssh access as [email protected]
It is also assumed that git is installed on myserver.com and myclient. To set up a git repository that is shared via ssh do the following:
git init --bare
Note that the --bare flag is needed to allow users to push to the repository.
git add file1 file2 etc
git commit -m 'initial commit'
git remote add origin ssh://[email protected]
git push origin master

I'm havin' trouble getting git to work.
I use it behind a proxy server that requires NTLM authentication, I use Cntlm (http://cntlm.sourceforge.net/).
I set up Cntlm using this guide (http://www.leg.uct.ac.za/howtos/use-isa-proxies)
On trying to use git, I errors. e.g
git clone http://git.gnome.org/gnome-shell-extensions
Cloning into 'gnome-shell-extensions'...
error: The requested URL returned error: 407 while accessing http://git.gnome.org/gnome-shell-extensions/info/refs
fatal: HTTP request failed
I also tried entering:
git clone git://git.gnome.org/gnome-shell-extensions
and I got:
Cloning into 'gnome-shell-extensions'...
fatal: unable to connect to git.gnome.org:
git.gnome.org[0: 22.214.171.124]: errno=Connection timed out
How does one fix this?

Cannot access git
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 25, 2010
so I am behind a proxy and I cannot access
git clone http://pcmanfm.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/pcmanfm/libfm
It throws up this error
Initialized empty Git repository in /home/jfreak/libfm/.git/
fatal: http://pcmanfm.git.sourceforge.net/g...ibfm/info/refs not found: did you run git update-server-info on the server?
I am pretty sure that nothing is wrong with the server
Output of echo $http_proxy is correct
I have tried replacing http with git but that throws up
pcmanfm.git.sourceforge.net[0: 126.96.36.199]: errno=Connection refused
fatal: unable to connect a socket (Connection refused)

Hi, I'm trying to install the Atlantis compiz plugin, but it says that I need to download it from git, I was just wondering how I might do that. I managed to navigate myself to http://gitweb.compiz.org/?p=compiz/p...ntis;a=summary but thats about it.
