Error code 404 when accessing php and xml files using Ubuntu 11.10
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 24, 2012
I set up a copy of Ubuntu 11.10 a few weeks ago and have been setting it up as a server. I have almost everything working but I am not able to access either xml or php files from either SmartFoxServer or Unity. I have changed the ownership and groups in my www folder to www-data but that didn't get it done. I do have phpmyadmin working, can telnet to the ports that the applications use. If I try http://localhost I do get the Apache screen showing that is working. ANy ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Best program to serve and sync media files between Ubuntu LTS and Win7
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 28, 2013
I am learning how to set up a home server. It will host a minecraft server, media server for the local network, and eventually I may dabble with a simple Apache server and home mail server. For now though, I've learned to do one thing at a time.
The minecraft server is up and running fine, and is the reason I am stuck on using Ubuntu 12.04, and I have a decent handle on the firewall (using iptables).
1: What is the best way to serve media files to a home network composed of Windows devices? I found Samba and could play with that, but does anyone have other or better suggestions? I will be sharing three directories: Music, Movies, and Television. Since my home network is all Windows laptops and desktops, is anything better than Samba?
2: I download, import, rip, and create my media files on a Windows 7 machine because it has the best hardware in my apartment. So, I have several hundred gigs of media files stored. I want the media server to sync with my computer and update any n

[SOLVED] Cannot execute binary files located in PWD, Ubuntu 10.4
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 23, 2011
I keep running into problems where after I have installed a command, even if I go into the directory, I cannot get it to execute by typing it's name.
chmod has been set to allow execution by owner, group, and all, but I am still not able to run the command even directly from where it is located.
I've tried setting the path, but the only thing that seems to make any headway is to make a symbolic link to the file and put that link into a directory that's in the path.

"Permission Denied" when using Ubuntu live cd to recover thunderbird files.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 2, 2009
On a crashed notebook that formally ran a dual boot vista/ubuntu8.10 setup, I'm trying to use an Ubuntu 9.04 live cd to copy my mozilla-thunderbird files to a usb drive. That is really the only thing that I would like save before I reformat the whole drive and install "jaunty".
Unfortunately, when I attempt this with the file browser, I receive this message:
"The folder ".mozilla-thunderbird" could not be copied because you do not have permission to read it." (I assume it's because I'm logged in as Live Session User...?)
Is there some way to log in as an "owner" on a live CD to get permission?
Is there a way to perform this action though the terminal without permission?
is there another live cd I should be using for this?
...or am a way of track?

i was trying to help a friend of mine installing Ubuntu after he tried it and decided to dual boot with his Windows Xp , after the installation was done , he rebooted then got an error message : "error: system error grub rescue".
i suggested he should try and fix it using the tool "boot-repair" .. but then he posted th following link ..
after noticing he downloaded and actually trying to install Ubuntu 12.10 and not 12.04! i suggested he should download and try to install Ubuntu 12.04 instead , and so we went to start the whole process all over again , but this time i made sure to check and test with the ISO MD5sum , he matched , then he went to burn the iso using Unetbootin , after that he gone Off-line .. haven't seen him since !
I spoke to a friend on IRC at #ubuntu , he noticed the extra partition /dev/sda5 .. which was a good catch of him!
I checked the partition table with him during the installations process ,
Permission denied copy files from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 26, 2012
I run Ubuntu 10.04 on my primary machine. I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 and also Debian (not sure the version, but current) on a second machine (dual boot). I can transfer files from my 10.04 machine to the second machine when running Debian. But when I try to transfer files from my 10.04 machine to my other machine when running Ubuntu 12.04, I get an error message that simply says, "Permission denied." On both machines I have set directories up for sharing with guest access on both machines. I also have no problem transferring stuff to and from my 10.04 machine and my 10.04 laptop or my wife's Winders box.
Can someone point me to instructions on how to fix this?
ubuntu 9.10 and 7zip files
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 31, 2010
I have a couple of .7z files that I need to extract.
The files are named below
Home Theater MEGA Pack v1.2.7z.004
Home Theater MEGA Pack v1.2.7z.003
Home Theater MEGA Pack v1.2.7z.002
Home Theater MEGA Pack v1.2.7z.001
I read that the fileroller can extract this using p7zip and I installed using the software center. I then try to open with the archive manager and get the following error
7-Zip 9.04 beta Copyright (c) 1999-2009 Igor Pavlov 2009-05-30
p7zip Version 9.04 (locale=en_US.UTF-8,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,4 CPUs)
Error: /home/xbmc/Downloads/Home Theater MEGA Pack v1.2.7z.004: Can not open file as archive
I however cannot even get the command of extract when right clicking on it (I believe since it does not have the .7z extention at the end). I have tried to change the file to a shorter name and the extention to .7z and the when I right click the extract option is there however I get the below same error
[Android] Ubuntu One Files feature requests
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 24, 2011
I'm a member of ubuntuone-android-hackers team on Launchpad, I work on Ubuntu One Files app. If you would like to see new features in the app, you can post your ideas here. I think the forums is a good and comfortable place to share ideas. We have already received quite a lot of requests via e-mail.
Most notably, these have been already requested:
- secure app launch with PIN entry
- preserve folder structure when auto-uploading files
- real sync (i.e. reupload a file, that has been modified; sync down favorite folders; etc)
We continue to fix bugs and improve on what we already have, this is just to give you a place to share ideas on new features. We will select the best we can take on given available time and resources. I can't guarantee we'll implement them, I can guarantee however that we're doing our best and I'll be keeping track of this official thread.
