VNC over SSH. Windows client Linux Server
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 6, 2004
I recently started a job where all the workstations have windows on them and I find that difficult to bare. I need my daily shot of Linux ;-)
I have been trying to use VNC to connect to my Linux box at home over SSH. I have Mandrake Linux 10 installed with tightvnc-server and ssh server. My server sits behind a Linksys router with port 22 forwarded to the serv.
At work I downloaded Putty for windows and TightVNC Viewer. I set up putty to forward 5901 to localhost:5900 and I can remotely connect via SSH to my home server.
The next bit is where I can not proceed beyond:
Logged in via ssh to my Linux server I issue the command
vncserver -geometry 1024x768 -depth 16:2 and after the initial questions about passwords(when I ran it for the first time) it seems that the Xvnc is started on screen 2.
If I open my VNC viewer and point it at localhost:0 the vnc viewer reports that "Failed to connect to server"
localhost::5901 makes the Vnc viewers connection dialogue d

ok! I using vncviewer client (vnc-3.3.7-x86_win32_viewer) to directly connect the linux box without ssh. You mentioned that I using zonealarm as my laptop, then I closed the zonealarm; then open the vncviewer client and type the internal ip (eg 192.168.1.3:1) follow :1.

VNC confusion Linux Client > Windows Host
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 6, 2011
Ok, firstly forgive me if I posted in the wrong forum, I was unsure! (this is also my firth thread on the forum, although I've lurked around for a bit!)
I just started using Ubuntu 10.10 as my main OS on my netbook, however I would like to access a few programs on my Windows Desktop but I'm having problems with the VNC server. First I tried the Real VNC Enterprise edition which was recommended to me but I noticed some people on this forum said TightVNC is the thing to use! So now I currently run that on my Desktop but I can't seem to connect to it from my Netbook. (connection times out)
Nmap reports that there is no VNC server running my Desktop, but my TightVNC says everything is up and running. Has anyone had any similar problems with VNC from Linux (client) to Windows (host) ? If so how did you work around it?
PS! Somewhat a novice Linux user here, so if you have a solution, be elaborate please!
This is just on my own LAN (for now)

need vnc client ubuntu
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 2, 2010
I am looking to use a vnc client similar to tight vnc that i use in windows to connect to a linux system.
I am running ubuntu on my laptop but need a remote desk top on a server that is running CentOS.
What is a good secure vnc client to use and how to set it up? I have tried several in the ubuntu software option but none will connect.
I can get connected if i boot into my window partition and use putty with tightvnc.
Please help as I dont want to use windows for this.
Good multitab ssh client for Windows?

I've yet to find a good, free SSH client for Windows. Putty works, but it doesn't have near the features of, say, gnome-terminal.
SSH ubuntu machine (client) into windows machine (server) to access lan ip
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 26, 2011
Ok, so here's my question:
I have a ubuntu machine running at home and I want it to be able to SSH into a windows machine inside a lan to access another computer inside a lan. It has to be done in a reverse SSH connection, connecting the windows machine to my ubuntu machine at home so I can send commands to and access resources from ips inside the windows machine lan. Is this possible?
Ubuntu Machine -> Internet -> Router -> windows machine
-> other lan ip
basically the windows machine would work as a proxy server to access the resources inside the lan.
Thank you so much in advance!
