[SOLVED] Display limited to 800x600 screen resolution on Ubuntu 9.04 on LG Flatron L1718S
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 3, 2010
Hie everyone! I'm vuelement. I'm a faithful user of Ubuntu Linux, especially 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. I have a problem with my screen resolution on my LG Flatron L1718S. It's a 17 inch and its recommended resolution is 1280x1024.I was on this resolution all along until now. Now I'm limited to 800x600 resolution. Here's what happened. Before installing Ubuntu 9.04 on a friend's computer, I put in his Seagate 40 Gig hard drive into his Intel Celeron Box with a 2.93 GHz and 512MB ram. I then plugged my monitor into his system. Upon booting, I discovered that the hard drive had a very strange looking operating system called OS2 Warp...seemed like Black XP to me. On the desktop, the icons were so big and bloated, the mouse was frozen, there was so much eyecandy which demanded so much graphics resources. His graphics card is an onboard one, framebuffer. I then rebooted the machine, this time running the Ubuntu 9.04 live CD. Resolution still ok, with 1024x768 this time. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 a
Ubuntu 10.04 black screen on boot
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 2, 2010
I'd like to test Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop Dell Inspiron 510m.
It is currently running Ubuntu 9.10.
The problem is:
- insert CD
- see initial splash screen
- see splash screen with white/red dots
- see blank screen and unable to do anything
I build a bootable USB stick from another Ubuntu 10.04 installation
using unetbootin, and I have the same behaviour on the Dell..
Interesting, same thing happens if I select the option for text boot
from the usbs tick :-(

location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 10, 2011
I am currently using Ubuntu 9.10.
On startup I get a blank screen prior to Login Window. On Ctrl+Alt+Del , it reboots my system and directs me to page GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4 with having following boot options:
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-23-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-23-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-22-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-22-generic(recovery mode)
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic(recovery mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)
Press enter to boot the selected OS. 'e' to edit the command before booting or 'c' for a command-line.
When I choose any of the options It again directs me to blank page prior to Login Window.
Please help as I cannot format my Laptop (specifications- 80 GB Hard Disk; 1200 MHz Ram) because I will lose all my Important files.
Also If you can suggest how can I retrieve my files and make a backup in case the problems persists. I don't have the Ubuntu 9.10 installation CD.
Ubuntu 8.04 black screen while playing games
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 29, 2008
I have a problem when trying to games on Ubuntu 8.04, the screen goes black in full screen mode with a resolution higher than 800x600.
I searched the forum and noticed that a few other people got the same problem but didn't get help or it didn't fix their problem.
I got no problem with playing games in 800x600 resolution, but the games that starts with a higher resolution is a problem. Because I can't change the resolution down to 800x600.
Any help is appreciated and I will gladly help with output if you give me the code/command to run them.
Thanks in advanced Christor.

location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 6, 2009
I have an intersting problem with Doom3. I installed it and when I play it, my screen resolution on my desktop (after I close doom3) changes to 1024x480 and becasue of that odd resolution I cannot change it under System->Preferences->Screen Resolution.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 with an ATI Radeon 9550 (yes it will run it, abit slowly) with fglrx 9.01 drivers. I would have posted my xorg.conf but I'm at my schools net connection bc I don't have one at home.

[SOLVED] Screen resolution settings higher than 800x600 with Ubuntu 10.04 inside Virtual PC
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 3, 2010
This is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.
I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu).
As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old&q
