Sorry if there is a better area for this thread.
I have been using tightVNC to get a GUI for my dummy terminal server running Ubuntu Server 11.04. It worked fine from the start. However, now when I execute the
vncserver -geometry 1280x1024 -depth 24 on the box and then open tightVNC on my windows vista laptop, I get a grey screen with an X for a cursor after logging in.
The xstartup info seems to be entered fine on the server side.
The one thing I will say I noticed is this:
WHen I opened tightVNC for the first time I got this screen: (http://www.havetheknowhow.com/images...tTime_htkh.jpg) and I was instructed to 'delete' that applet from my config via some instructions I was following and that worked perfectly. I was never given that error screen again...UNTIL this most recent time...I think I hit 'don't delete' and it hasn't worked ever since. Ultimately, I thought "no big whoop...just uninstall tightVNC and all it's component apps then reinstall and get
Only black screen with blinking cursor after first installation
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 8, 2015
I tried installing Lubuntu on my old eeePC T91. It was previously running Joli OS 1.2 (Ubuntu 9 based) which now is retired.
I uses the alternate installer for 15.04. The installation went without any issues. However when I now start the PC it never starts booting. It shows the BIOS screen and then just a black screen with a white blinling cursor (blinking line) and then nothing happens at all. Meaning the system does not boot at all. I tried the installation twice with the same result.
Whats the issue? Is it possibly related with the boot manager? I choose to install it to the MBR? Should I choose a different option?
xstartup configured, Vnc still only loads grey screen on boot.

Hey, this is the first time I've posted a problem here, so I hope I get some help
I've configured my xstartup script to run "startkde &", and I created a starup script that runs vncserver as that partifular user.
Now here's my problem:
When the linux machine boots up, VNC starts, but kde doesn't load. I only get a grey screen and a terminal. If I stop the process (vncserver -kill :1) and restart it again, then everything works as expected.
Is there anything that I'm missing or overlooking?
Sparc VNC, only they grey screen appears
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 26, 2008
I am working on a Sun Sparc 5.10 - Sunfire.
I have to setup VNC on this. I have downloaded and installed the packages from sunfreeware.com and the install and connect works fine.
But I only get a black & grey dotted screen no xterm window.
I have used the default xstartup file. I have tried editing the conf file to put gnome-session but that doesnt work too.
I just kill the current Xvnc and edit the xstartup file. If thats add to the info.
Can someone tell me where I am going wrong?
Grey blank screen with various vnc services from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 14.04
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 1, 1970
So, I have been attempting to access my work computer (Ubuntu 14.04) from home (windows 7).
I am using vnc and I have tried both tightvnc, xrdp, and default vino services on work computer.
Here is what I found not working and working.
Tightvnc server/xrdp server (linux) + tightvnc viewer (windows): NOT WORKING
Result: grey blank screen with X cursor
Attempted diagnosis: gnome-fallback, x-windows, gdm, all variations of xstartup files I could find online. Didn't find a solution
Vino server (linux) + tightvnc viewer (windows): WORKING if encryption disabled
Very straight forward setup through Desktop Sharing
Result: No matching security types! from tightvnc viewer connection
Solution: gsettings set org.gnome.Vino require-encryption false
Tightvnc server/Vino server (linux) + Remote Desktop (windows): NOT WORKING
Result: grey blank screen with X cursor (regardless of the vino security session)
So, I now have one solution that works but I don't feel secured with the encryption turned
Acer Aspire One only boots to black screen with mouse pointer
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 15, 2010
Hi, I'm a linux newbie so go easy on me with technical terms.
I've got a Acer Aspire One ZG5. Everything was working fine until one day when I went to switch it on and it shows up everything its suppose to, the blue logo etc but then it loads upto a black screen with the mouse poitner. I can move the mouse pointer around and such and the lights flash but stop suddenly.
I can't use the bios recovery disk as I haven't got a USB big enough.
How can I fix my netbook? I miss it
Reply if you need any more information!
VNC grey screen and start on boot 12.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 6, 2012
I have 12.04 LTS installed and I am trying to get VNC to work. I want to be able to connect to existing sessions, and have it start on boot. I followed this guide and have left a comment to try and fix my problems but no dice. I have also tried all solutions I have found on google, including the one here, but I could not get it to work (I am missing something easy I am sure).
When I connect to the VNC session I get a grey screen with three checkboxes:
