Nothing but a black screen Gnu Grub... (Wubi)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 10, 2009
In an attempt to start learning more about Ubuntu I installed 9.10 using Wubi I'm having a slight problem:
If I select the Ubuntu option in the boot menu I get a black screen (Console-like) with header "Gnu Grub 1.97 beta"
And nothing more than that. I can't seem to get Ubuntu to boot normally. Seeing as I'm a total nobb, what am I doing wrong here?
ps: CPU is AMD phenom 2 x3 720 in case that might matter. (And yes, installing the 64 bit version)
[SOLVED] Ubuntu 11.10 black screen after boot screen
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 13, 2011
I've been running Ubuntu 11.04, did a clean install 2 months ago. Today I got a update notification to upgrade to 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot and I was a bit hesitant at th beginning but then I said why not and went for it. All went fine at the start.
After it was done with upgrading and cleaning the packages it restarted and I was pretty amazed with the new light dm log in screen. However, I did a restart right away to complete the install. This resulted in a black screen after the boot screen.
I did get a "waiting for network configuration" at the first start up but didn't think any of it at the beginning and everything went fine. But after the second restart, I get the boot screen with the same message and then instead of a log in screen its just black.
I tried restarting form battery source, unplugging all the usb's I had connected but still I get this black screen.
It a bit annoying cause at the moment I can't get past this, therefore I have no access to anything,
[Resolved]DVI to HMDI Linux issue, Black Screen.[Resolved]
location: linux.com - date: April 8, 2012
Hey everyone its been a while, I have been busy with school and life it's good to be posting here again. So January 24th I turned 27 and my lovely fiance bought me a new LCD HDTV 22" to use as a monitor. I of course was thrilled. However on my dual boot system when I tried to go to Ubuntu 11.04, all I get is a black screen past the grub boot loader. I have a ATI Radeon HD 4850 with DVI connections and an S Video, my monitor has one HDMI connection. I am using a DVI to HDMI adapter then a HDMI connection to my monitor. I have to admit I have not spent much time on this yet, but since it gave me a reason to post I thought I would see if someone else has ran into this and fixed it, or if anyone had some good advice on what to do. I realize I'll probably have to hook up my old monitor to begin repairing the issue but thought I would start out with some good advice first.
Thanks for the help can't wait for the feedback.

Plants vs Zombies black screen then closes
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 25, 2009
So first off, Plants vs Zombies is a bad *** game. That said, my issue, I checked in some other threads http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...plants+zombies is a devious one. After launching it goes to black full screen but never gets to the Popcap logo and after a few seconds, locks up. I can scroll through my open processes but can't even get into them. I have to reboot. It works in on my windows boot but I'd rather not even go there lol
Has anyone else had this issue?
I have a GeForce 8800 GT

[SOLVED] Black screen after booting Ubuntu 11.10 from USB
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 19, 2012
I'm trying to install ubuntu 11.10 x64 onto my laptop and replace windows. I saved the ubuntu 11.10 DVD iso to my fat32 USB stick and ran the Universal USB installer. I resarted my computer and hit esc then F9 to access the boot menu. From there I was able to boot from my USB. Next, a black menu screen with grey font appeared.
It had 5 or 6 different options to select from, including: Run ubuntu from usb; install ubuntu to hard disk; advanced options; and help. The first two options gave me the same issue. Everything appeared to be fine for about 5 seconds but after many strings of code had appeared on the screen, it flashed once and went completely black. However, I was surprised to hear "chimes" or something (seemingly implying some measure of success) only moments after the screen had gone black. Each time I was forced to restart because I had no idea what was going on with the screen black and all.
Here are my specs:

Ubuntu 10.04 black screen on boot
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 2, 2010
I'd like to test Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop Dell Inspiron 510m.
It is currently running Ubuntu 9.10.
The problem is:
- insert CD
- see initial splash screen
- see splash screen with white/red dots
- see blank screen and unable to do anything
I build a bootable USB stick from another Ubuntu 10.04 installation
using unetbootin, and I have the same behaviour on the Dell..
Interesting, same thing happens if I select the option for text boot
from the usbs tick :-(
Ubuntu 8.04 black screen while playing games
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 29, 2008
I have a problem when trying to games on Ubuntu 8.04, the screen goes black in full screen mode with a resolution higher than 800x600.
I searched the forum and noticed that a few other people got the same problem but didn't get help or it didn't fix their problem.
I got no problem with playing games in 800x600 resolution, but the games that starts with a higher resolution is a problem. Because I can't change the resolution down to 800x600.
Any help is appreciated and I will gladly help with output if you give me the code/command to run them.
Thanks in advanced Christor.
Diablo 1 shows black screen after intro on Mandriva 2008 w/ WINE.0.9.44
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 4, 2007
I am JUST venturing into the world of Wine (I eventually would LOVE to get rid of Windoze altogether... currently I have XP and Mandriva 2008 on dual boot) and I've managed to install Diablo II LOD, Astrolog32 (an astrology tool for calculating Birth/Natal Charts), and Omikron - The Nomad Soul (I know, I love the old-school stuff! ). Unfortunately I cannot get the first Diablo to run correctly. It SEEMS to install ok... I can see the Blizzard logos and if I don't hit any buttons the intro screen starts up ok. But after that I get a black screen, although I still hear the music in the background, and I can also hear if I move thru the options with my Up/Down arrows and press enter to select. Is this an issue w/ Wine? Or my comp? I'll insert the contents of my xorg.conf file (who knows, maybe my settings are off).
I've also noticed that on Omikron and Diablo II LOD when I setup wine.cfg I select 1024x768 for my resolution, but it defaults to 800x600. I can't change my monitor's
