Best alternative to Ubuntu
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 6, 2011
I'm new to Linux having installed ubuntu alongside windows xp about a month ago initially everything worked ok I even installed peppermint to an old low spec pc which I controlled remotely via KDRC, then came the upgrade to 11.10 and that ridiculous desktop and it's been all downhill since then first I lost connection to a printer on the network which someone on here kindly helped me sort out now I'm I'm having endless network sharing issues which I couldn't even start to explain on here for help, I don't want to give up on Linux completely I understand that for the most part the problem is my lack of knowledge but my initial experience of it was good and apart from that I despise the monopolistic ethos of Microsoft, but I feel my system is so screwed up that only a re-installation can sort it out, From what I read Ubunto is the best and most user friendly distro but I honestly hate that desktop so I'm looking for some advice as to what other distro my be more suited

what linux distribution as best alternative for cisco router
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 23, 2007
I'm planning of building a network with an E1 internet connection. However, buying and using a CISCO router to connect an E1 ckt. is a huge expensive. I don't have enough budget for my lab project.
Thru googling I found several open source OS's. One of my option is implementing an OPENBSD with firewall and NAT capabilities. Then, my second option is using an IPCOP + Firewall + NAT. However, from the examples it only showed DSL connection. My question is:
Does the two OS can handle E1 ckt. and it routes/surf from private workstations going to internet?
What are the differences from using a router (like cisco router) between OPENBSD firewall + NAT and IPCOP firewall + NAT?
Does it really needs a router when connecting from E1?
My propose project if this is posible will be:
ISP E1 connection ---> OPENBSD Firewall w/ NAT -----> My Private Network
I am hoping that I will find an answer on this forum.
Thank you in advanced.

What's a good alternative to Ubuntu 11.04?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 12, 2011
Been playing around with the new Ubuntu 11.4 and really don't like it. The previous versions were much better. How long will Ubuntu 10.10 be supported and what would be a good alternative to eventually switch to? Thanks.

Guest linux in Virtualbox cannot run KVM inside it, what is best alternative?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: August 12, 2015
HOST: Win 8.1
Guest: Lubuntu 14.04
I develop my apps in my guest
I read here:
that you cannot use the android sdk emulation in a virtualized linux, at least not under virtualbox.
Now I can change to vmware workspace. But I like virtualbox better. And I am afraid to break my system.
Is there a way I can, say, install android emulation on my host (windows 8.1) and say, share the android projects in the virtualbox shared folder. Then just run the tests on the shared folder from my host?
Note downloading and installing the android sdk for windows will take me at least 6 hours.
What's the best alternative to C++ for realtime graphics programming? [closed]
location: linuxexchange.com - date: August 9, 2012
C++ just sucks too much of my time by making me micro-manage my own memory, making me type far too much (hello std::vector<Thingy>::const_iterator it = lotsOfThingys.begin()), and boring me with long compile times. What's the single best alternative for serious real-time graphics programming? Garbage collection is a must (as is the ability to avoid its use when necessary), and speed must be competitive with C++. A reasonable story for accessing C libs is also a must.
(Full disclosure: I have my own answer to this, but I'm interested to see what others have found to be good alternatives to C++ for real-time graphics work.)
Edit: Thanks everyone for the thoughtful replies. Given that there's really no "right" answer to this question I won't be selecting any particular answer. Besides I'd just pick the language I happen to like as a C++ alternative, which wouldn't really be fair.
What is the best alternative IDE to Visual Studio [closed]
location: linuxexchange.com - date: May 5, 2012
As I've only ever used Visual Studio for .NET development, I would like to expand my horizons and see what else there is on offer as an alternative to it. So what in your opinion is the best alternative to Visual Studio? Is there a viable alternative?
