I was a happy Windows user until 2006 - that's when I started to "learn" the new things that were to come with Vista, and that's when I learned about all the corruption involving MS. Not that I was surprised, but I just thought that I can't support them any longer. I switched to SUSE, then to Fedora and then came to Ubuntu and stayed there happily. Now I do believe that MS has to come to an end for obvious reasons, but I have a hard time convincing other Windows users, because of compatibility reasons. What would the best argument be to make the switch? (and I mean for good!) On a technical basis I have to say that Windows might be a lousy OS, but it does indeed have huge advantages (beyond compatibility). Taken that into account, how can I make my case? What's your thought on that?

In one of my college classes I'm suppose to do a 5 minute persuasive speech. I was thinking of doing one to persuade people to use Linux over Windows. Any good ideas on what I could use as main topics?

I've been a full time Linux user for a long time, and have used several different Distros. I tend to 'Distro Hop' as they say..but not because I can't find the right one for me -- I can manage in almost any, but because I like experimenting and testing new things.
Anyway, I recently re-installed Windows on a separate partition so I could play an unsupported game..and after obtaining the many needed drivers to make everything work again, I surprisingly found out that sound in Windows XP, at least for my card, sucks compared to Linux.
I mean..after being accustom to the great, clear sound in Linux with Alsa, logging into windows and listening to music was a completely different experience..and not a good one. I even installed the latest drivers for my card and it still sounded poor in comparison.
So I can't help but wonder why that would be, and also, if anyone else has come to the same conclusion for them -- that sound in linux (especially music) sounds much better than in Win

LXer: Is Linux better than Windows 8 for gaming?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 28, 2012
Published at LXer:
If you’re a real gamer you know just how terrifying Windows 8 can be. With the changes they’ve made there just might not be any sort of viable way for real gamers to get the kind of experience they want. Expect seriously inconvenient DRM implementations and major difficulties for independent developers because of the proprietary (and profitable) app store built in to Windows 8. Independent developers are going to have no choice but to make the transition, meaning quality free games will disappear, too.
Why GNU/Linux is Better than Windows

Why GNU/Linux is Better than Windows.
Well its time to do some review on OSes. Today the statistics says that the number of Windows users are incomparable to that of GNU/Linux users. The whole the computer users community is divided into Programmers(PG) and Non-Programmers(NPG). We all know the number of PGs are negligible when compared to NPGs. Thus the choice of OS selection lies solely on the hands of NPGs. NPGs are novice people to some extent, because they are not programmers. GNU/Linux is a good platform for programming. Programming is all we wanna do with computers. The architecture of Linux is the most ideal. When you talk about how a OS should behave (rather than look) it is GNU/Linux. Well then why people were sticking towards that muddy Windows. The reasons are "Standard Look and Feel", "Ease of Use(No flexibility, Tools are predefined, say if u wan't to dial up to internet there is only one way that is easier for novices - dialupnetworking, but i

My dad is using Windows XP and recently installed Office 2000 (he was using openoffice but needed to open password protected files).
So, being his IT consultant, I had to make his change from outlook express to Outlook 2000 as painless as possible. I managed to import everything except the message rules. I have quite a specific mail rule set up in express, "If the to line contains 'xyz' Do not dowload from the server" since we have different aliases set up for home and work.
THIS MESSAGE RULE DOESN'T EXIST IN OUTLOOK 2000!
So now his mail client is downloading the whole families mail. The reason I'm posting this is because people always say the pros of Windows is that you have support, and that support lacks in linux. Well, I phoned my support line for microsoft and was told, "No, that feature isn't available in Outlook 2000" Okay, so why did we pay more for it? "I didn't write the software." Of course you didn't! What genius, this is the su
