Windows Altascii number functionality in linux
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 3, 2005
I type in french a lot and I need to use accents and other special characters a lot. In windows, to type such a character one would hold down alt and type in the ascii number of the letter one wants. In linux, there is no such alt-number combination. (at least not for the same purpose) Is there a way to emulate this key combination in linux?
Windows Vs Mac Vs Linux programming abilities

Hello,
Windows and Mac seem to be more unified than Linux. Shouldn't Windows and Mac be better at programming than Linux? I use Windows XP, I don't want to try Mac, I use Ubuntu and Puppy Linux in a "Live-USB". I've never taken computer science, engineering, or anything related to computers. So i ask you, which OS is the best for programming and why?

LXer: Gaming Benchmarks: Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu Linux
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 16, 2010
Published at LXer:
At the beginning of this month we published workstation benchmarks comparing Windows 7 to Ubuntu Linux. In those tests, which were a continuation of tests from earlier this year when looking to see whether Windows 7 is faster than Ubuntu 10.04 and how fast is Windows compared to Mac OS X and Linux, the two operating systems performed quite closely in our workstation tests with only a few exceptions. Today, however, we are back to looking at the Linux vs. Windows performance of the Lenovo ThinkPad W510 and this time we are looking at the OpenGL gaming performance between Windows 7 Professional and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

LXer: NVIDIA Performance: Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu Linux 12.10
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 15, 2012
Published at LXer:
With a largely shared driver code-base across platforms, the binary graphics drivers offered by AMD and NVIDIA perform at roughly the same speed for OpenGL between Linux and Windows; that's traditionally been the case and what Phoronix benchmarks in prior years have shown for NVIDIA and AMD. However, the OpenGL performance difference between operating systems is beginning to widen due to compositing window managers and other factors now affecting the results to a greater extent. In this article are benchmarks of the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver from Microsoft Windows 7 and then development snapshots of Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity and KDE desktops.

Moving from Thunderbird in Windows to Thunderbird in Linux
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 24, 2005
I would like to move all of my numerous mail configurations from Thunderbird in Windows to Thunderbird on MandrakeLinux (now Mandriva) 10.1 Official. I have tried copying the profile files but that doesn't seem to work as it says they are in use or something along those lines.
The main reason for doing this is that I have a lot of mail accounts and filtering rules that are a pain to setup again. Thunderbird needs an "Import/Export Settings" tool.
Does anyone have any ideas about doing this?
Replace Windows 7 starter with Linux?
location: linux.com - date: February 12, 2010
I have an Asus netbook that I purchased for my son which has the Windows 7 Starter 32 bit operating system. I am wondering if I can replace Windows 7 with Linux. When I bought it at Best Buy, we asked if it would run certain games that he wants to run, and they said it would. This and other things about it make me feel like Windows 7 starter is garbage. It looks like Micro$oft wants about $200 to upgrade. I wonder if Linux would be better, and if it would do more than Windows 7.

LXer: Workstation Benchmarks: Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu Linux

Published at LXer:
As I alluded to recently, the second round of Windows 7 vs. Linux benchmarks -- with the first round consisting of Is Windows 7 Actually Faster Than Ubuntu 10.04 and Mac OS X vs. Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu benchmarks -- are currently being done atop a Lenovo ThinkPad W510 notebook that is quite popular with business professionals. With the high-end ThinkPad W510 boasting a dual quad-core Intel Core i7 CPU with Hyper-Threading plus a NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M graphics processor, we began this second round of cross-platform benchmarks by running a set of workstation tests. In this article we are mainly looking at the workstation graphics (via SPECViewPerf) performance along with some CPU/disk tests.

LXer: Windows 8 Beats Ubuntu Linux For Intel "Haswell" OpenGL
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 25, 2013
Published at LXer:
While we have published many Linux articles about Intel Haswell since the debut of the processors a month and a half ago, coming out now are our first benchmarks of the Microsoft Windows 8 performance against Ubuntu 13.10 Linux when using an Intel Core i7 4770K processor with HD Graphics 4600. Past Phoronix benchmarks have shown the Intel OpenGL performance to be superior on Windows over the Intel open-source Linux driver, but is this the case for Haswell?
