Wll I am a rather big fan of yoper but as of recent I have been not installing the OS on my machine because of the error when I update the distribution. I install yoper correctly so on and so forth yet I perform the "apt-get dist-update" and everything downloads accordinally yet when the installation initializes it freezes on the XFree86. Can this be contributed because I am updating while I am in X? because if so I have done this before while running X and everything goes quite well. If you can please help me out with this I can get back to using Yoper. Thanks again for all fo your advice.
Upgrade Just By Changing Repositories?
location: linux.com - date: September 17, 2010
Okay, I know this sounds like a newbie question, but here's why I'm asking:
Xubuntu 9.10 is awesome, fast, and perfect on my 'puter. The latest version is very slow, troublesome, and very resource hungry.
When 9.10 reaches "end of life," why can't I just edit my software sources list to "Lucid" instead of "Karmic," rather than upgrade and have my poor 'puter slowed down by all that buggy Plymouth and PulseAudio stuff they put in 10.04?
I would seriously rather run 9.10 unsupported (and fast) than a supported version that makes my poor old hand-me-down 'puter slow to a crawl.

Linux Newbie Netbook buying advice: XP/GNU and Ubuntu upgrade
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 11, 2009
I'm currently in the market for a new netbook. I have my eye on a Asus s101H. As a complete Linux novice who'd like to get into Linux I'd like to know:
1. Should I stick with what I know and get one with XP and install dual boot Ubuntu?
2. Should I get the GNU Linux model and install Ubuntu. (Can I just install Ubuntu on top of GNU, or do I need to uninstall it prior to installing Ubuntu)?
3. Can I just get the GNU version and live with it (everybody I know seems to be harping on about Ubuntu)?
I'm not really interested in alternative netbooks, unless the process of loading Ubuntu is without problems.
Thanks in advance....
Trash icon vanished from desktop after Gnome 3 desktop upgrade
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 16, 2011
Hi, I've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 (clean install) didn't like Unity and decided to give Gnome 3 desktop environment a try. It's really easy on the eye and nice to use, but I seem to have lost the trash icon from the desktop. I can still left click on anything to send to the trash ... but I can't restore from the trash because I don't know where the icon is. Does anyone know how to restore the trash icon to the desktop?

upgrade ubuntu 12.04 to 13.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 13, 2013
Currently I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I am contemplating upgrading to 13.04 when its stable version is released toward the end of this month. Would I be able to by pass 12.10 and go directly to 13.04 through the Update Manager or would I need to upgrade to 12.10 first and then go to 13.04 when it is available (stable version)?
[SOLVED] System applications very slow to open after upgrade to 13.04
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 5, 2013
My computer was running 11.04 until recently. I wanted to upgrade, but it wouldn't let me go straight to 13.04, so I went to 12.04 then to 13.04. I was having some weird issues and I was informed that doing a dist-upgrade doesn't always go smoothly, so I ended up doing a reinstall from DVD of 13.04 formatting the root directory but leaving /home intact. Now I am having some issues with applications opening slowly.
For example, I timed it yesterday and opening Dolphin file explorer took 1:15 before a window appeared. Sometimes the windows never seem to appear. For example, I will click System Settings and get the small bouncing icon and it will appear on the system tray as loading, but then it disappears from the tray and the window doesn't appear. It seems to be more concentrated on system applications (e.g. System Setting, Muon Package Manager, etc.), whereas other applications like Chrome or Komodo Edit seem to start up at a normal rate.
Any help in isolating/r
